Best Florida Fishing Spots (That You’ve Never Fished!) #2 Upper Florida Keys

Upper Florida Keys SoundsThe Complete Florida Fishing list of the Five Best Florida Fishing Spots (That You’ve Never Fished!) had to find a spot in the Florida Keys.  The Florida Keys are widely considered one of the greatest fishing spots in the world.  It was tough to find a location where most anglers pass over, but we named the Bays and Sounds between Florida City and Key Largo as #2 on our list of the Best Florida Fishing Spots.

Roughly 15 miles after you leave Florida City heading south on US-1, you will arrive with Long Sound and Little Blackwater Sound on your right and Manatee Bay on your left.  Although these are highly coveted areas to fish, the average recreational fisherman has the strong tendency to pass up them up for the crystal clear waters and cold beers further down in the Florida Keys.  Depending on the length of the car ride, it can be difficult to “settle” for anything less than the best the Florida Keys has to offer.  But do not be mistaken, this is no average Florida fishing spot.   These inshore waters on the Florida Keys present a great opportunity to land that inshore fish of a life time.

As we all know places like Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine, and Key West hold some of the greatest fisheries in the World.  However, these back bays also hold a great abundance of inshore fish that would rival any other Florida fishing location.  With monster Snook and Redfish among other species lurking in these waters, it would be difficult to pass up. Yet, most of us do.

If time permits, be sure to fish some of these areas.  For the most part you will need a boat or kayak to access some of these bountiful honey holes, but there are some locations just off the road to sneak a couple casts (Be sure to check the posted signs).  You can launch at Gilbert’s Resort for a small fee (currently $20), which is located just before entering into Key Largo.  If you pass over the Jewfish Creek Bridge, you have gone too far and will need to turn around.

The Florida Keys is all about relaxing and clearing your mind.  The same should apply for the drive in (or out) of the Florida Keys.  Take a couple hours and explore some of the best inshore Florida fishing between Florida City and Key Largo.  Be sure to send pictures of your catch to CompleteFloridaFishing.com and we will include them on our site. We hope to hear from you soon!
