Coming in at #1 on the Best Florida Fishing Spots (That You’ve Never Fished!) is Dry Tortugas National Park off of Key West, Florida.
Located 70 miles off the west coast of Key West sit the small barrier islands that make up the United States National Park of the Dry Tortugas. The Dry Tortugas National Park is made up of mostly reefs and 7 small islands or keys. These keys, unlike the mainland, are only accessible by boat or seaplane.
Many fisherman, from around the world, frequent the Florida Keys and Key West each year in search of the fishing trip of a lifetime. However, for one reason or another, not many anglers take the opportunity to fish the Dry Tortugas. Yes, the Florida Keys on any given day can offer up a better fishing experience than a majority of the world’s waters, but remember this is not about spots you have fished, this is about “Spots You’ve Never Fished!”. Not fishing the Dry Tortugas is like not putting bait on your hook. With the islands separated from the mainland by 70 miles, nature is at its finest with very minimal human interaction. Let’s just say the reef fishing is like shooting fish in a barrel! The variety of species calling these waters their home is unparalleled. The reefs hold giant Mutton Snapper, Goliath Grouper, and huge Gags, while the offshore waters contain Mahi Mahi, black fin tuna, and many others.
For those who do not have access to a boat or at least a boat with offshore capabilities (140+ miles round trip), there are plenty of captains in Key West willing to take you out there. Listed below are a few charters to get you started with your Tortugas fishing search.
